外部から25番をたたいた際にsmtpがちゃんとログを出しているので、
マシンやサービスが違うわけではないようです。

ログのレベルを上げて調べてみるとなんと

と、しっかりとAUTHの指示をだしておりました。
なのになぜかクライアント側ではそれを受け取っておりません。
